Charges For Killing Back Bear

June 26, 2015

A Meridian man has pleaded guilty to federal charges of obstructing a federal investigation into the killing of a protected Louisiana Black Bear in east Mississippi.

Federal prosecutors said in a news release 28-year-old Travis Butler arranged on January 4, 2014, for a taxidermist in Quitman to mount a Louisiana Black Bear illegally killed in Whynot community of Lauderdale County.

When a federal and state investigation began into the killing, Butler persuaded the taxidermist to conceal the Black Bear's hide.

Butler pleaded guilty Monday in federal court in Jackson.  He will be sentenced September 3.

He faces a maximum penalty of up to one year in prison under the Endangered Species Act and faces a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in prison for obstruction.

Coming Out Party For Black Bears in MS

June 23, 2015

June has been like a coming out party for black bears in Central Mississippi and being caught on camera.

A photo was shared over the weekend of a bear that was in a tree in the resident's front yard in Satartia, MS.  Bears have also been spotted in Clinton on Pinehaven Road and along Highway 18 near Pentecostal Drive.  Sightings have also been seen in Yazoo County.  Motorist in the area should proceed with caution.

Anyone who sees a bear should call Animal Control at 769-257-1899.

Wildlife biologist said the bear population is growing and young bears are being pushed out of their homes. "These little young guys are just wandering everywhere," said Richard Rummel, of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.  "They will hit a creek bottom, a river bottom, any wooded area.

They are kind of looking for their own home range."  Black bears can cover a lot of ground.  Tank, a black bear at the Jackson Zoo, was released in north Mississippi and then captured again a year later in Mobile County, Alabama.

My Grandson’s 25th Birthday!

Carl shown in the Cedar Hill tree stand at Homewood Hunting Club in Claiborne County, MS.

Today my grandson, Carlton "Carl" Thomas, turns 25 years old.  We used to go hunting together and had a wonderful time.  I was so happy the day he got his very first deer a 5 pt. buck.  It was also written up in our paper, The Vicksburg Post which read - Carlton was hunting with his Gran Gran, Marian Phillips, during youth weekend (2003) when he got a 5-point buck somewhere around the Big Black River.  The deer weighed 150 lbs. and he used his Gran Gran's .270 to make the nearly 100 yard shot.

That was one of the best days of my life and I'm sure Carl would agree that it was a great and memorable day for him as well. Wishing my grandson, who now lives in Wisconsin, a very Happy Birthday and I will always cherish our memories together hunting in our great wild outdoors. I love and miss you so very much!  Have a happy day!  Gran Gran

My Great Coyote Story

June 17, 2015

My Facebook friend, Mike Johnson, put a lot of time and effort into doing a great video collage of all his photos and video footage of the neighborhood coyotes, with map, note cards and narration.  It's titled "My Great Coyote Story!"  It's 9.5 minutes long but well worth your time to see his pictures of wildlife in our great wild outdoors! A very nice presentation, Mike!
